Bringing the past to life at Milton L. Olive Middle School history fair

Milton L. Olive Middle School students showcased their knowledge and enthusiasm for the past during the school’s first History Fair on May 15. Fifth and sixth grade students created dioramas depicting historical themes and landmarks to transform the school’s gymnasium into a walk-through museum.
Featured topics included the Roman Colosseum, Ancient Egypt, Early Man, the Amazon Rainforest and the Great Wall of China. Each project was judged based on depth of research, visual presentation and the students’ ability to explain their project and answer questions demonstrating knowledge of the topic.
“The History Fair is an exciting opportunity for our students to dive into the past and explore it in a hands-on, creative way,” said Earnestine Sweeting, assistant director of social studies and English Language Arts. “Their hard work and excitement truly brought history to life and we are incredibly proud of what they accomplished.”
Winners of the school-level competition will represent Milton L. Olive Middle School at the districtwide History Fair on Wednesday, June 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Wyandanch Public Library.
