Two Wyandanch Scholars Earn Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award

Wyandanch Memorial High School exceptional scholar-athletes Simone Chippy and Marvin Fenwick are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Suffolk Zone Physical Education award.

The Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance honored both seniors for their outstanding health and physical education achievements during the Suffolk Zone High School Leadership Awards Dinner on Feb. 28.

“We are extremely proud of these scholar-athletes who have earned this recognition through their hard work and determination to succeed,” Interim Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Arlise Carson said. “They both serve as role models for our younger scholars and bring pride to our community.”

Simone Chippy is a three-sport scholar-athlete, participating in cross-country, spring track and winter track, and a New York State Public High School Scholar-Athlete. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and U.S. Army ROTC.

Marvin Fenwick is a three-sport scholar-athlete, participating in football, spring rack and winter track, and a New York State Public High School Scholar-Athlete. He is also a member of the Wyandanch Memorial High School Kappa League and marching band.

Recipients of the Suffolk Zone Physical Education award must meet the following criteria: Earn an A average or has earned above 90% in high school health and physical education classes. This student earns an overall grade point average of 3.0 ("B") on a 4.0 ("A") scale at the completion of their 11th grade year and continues at their potential during their senior year; Demonstrates responsible, empathetic and culturally responsive personal and social skills, including confidence, character, civility, collaboration, and citizenship; Is a leader in health and physical education class, and demonstrates the ability to accept responsibility for regular class tasks. This student makes an outstanding effort to be a self-directed learner, a critical thinker and problem-solver, and an effective communicator. This student demonstrates a positive attitude toward the instructional activity and provides support for the success of others; Is active in a leadership capacity and is a productive citizen in and outside the school as: an officer in a health or physical education organization, president of a health or physical education related club, an active

member of a school or community group, a volunteer for a support group such as Special Olympics, Athletes Helping Athletes, or Best Buddies, and/or captain of a team/club, etc.; Is someone who teachers and students look at as living and advocating for healthy and active lifestyles inside and outside of school.
